Poza Azul Waterfall Revitalization

Project Overview: Poza Azul Waterfall Revitalization

Poza Azul Revitalization is a community-led project in Dominicalito that improves trails, safety, and visitor experiences at the waterfall while protecting the natural environment.

Interventions include upgraded paths, handrails, and shaded areas, carefully designed despite steep slopes and limited space. Support this project to promote responsible tourism, environmental education, and community engagement.

Protecting and Improving a Natural Waterfall

Located in Dominicalito, just minutes from the beach, Poza Azul is one of the area’s most used and recognized natural attractions. Its easy access and constant flow of visitors make it a key point within the local tourism landscape, with strong potential to generate broader community benefits.

Despite its popularity, the site has developed without formal infrastructure or safety improvements. Informal trails, slippery surfaces, and the absence of clear guidance reduce safety and limit the overall visitor experience, particularly as tourism continues to grow in the region.

This project addresses that gap by introducing low-impact, strategic interventions that improve safety, usability, and environmental awareness—allowing Poza Azul to function not only as a natural landmark, but as a well-managed public asset for Dominicalito.

Current Challenges on Site

Despite its popularity, the site currently presents several conditions that affect safety, comfort, and overall usability.

Our Approach: Low-Impact, High-Value Interventions

Our approach focuses on practical, low-impact actions that improve safety, comfort, and visitor experience—while remaining easy to maintain and independently fundable.

Improve Trails & Steps

Stabilizing paths and steps to reduce risks, erosion, and improve overall safety.

Install Handrails

Adding handrails in critical sections to support safer access along steep areas.

Add Educational Signage

Clear signage to guide visitors and promote respect for local flora, fauna, and rules.

Safer Parking & Visitor Orientation

Designated space for supervision, waste separation, and clear visitor guidance at the parking area.

Engage Community & Sponsors

Coordinating local participation and item-based sponsorship for each intervention.

Project Scope & Estimated Budget

This project is structured as a set of clearly defined, low-impact interventions, each with an estimated budget and scope of work.

Costs reflect not only materials and construction, but also professional planning, coordination, and regulatory processes required to ensure safety, environmental responsibility, and long-term viability.

Each intervention can be supported independently, allowing donors and partners to contribute to specific components of the project.

InterventionScope of WorkEstimated Budget (USD)
Existing trail cleanup and preparationRemoval of unsafe concrete elements and debris, controlled waste disposal, and trail preparation to improve safety and drainage. The enhanced scenario includes additional surface stabilization and durability measures in high-use areas.5,000 – 8,000
Low-impact stair and trail improvementsLocalized steps and surface stabilization added only in critical sections to reduce risk (base scenario). The enhanced scenario includes a continuous elevated stair system following the natural slope, with isolated foundations, non-slip steps, and intermediate resting landings.15,000 – 40,000
Handrails and safety barriersInstallation of handrails and protective elements in the most critical risk areas (base scenario), with expanded and continuous safety barriers for improved comfort and long-term safety in the enhanced scenario.10,000 – 25,000
Interpretive signageDesign and installation of a primary educational panel with site rules and environmental information (base scenario), with additional panels and reinforced signage in the enhanced scenario.3,000 – 6,000
Parking amenities and caretaker shelterBench, waste bin, and a basic open shaded structure to support parking oversight (base scenario), with improved durability and integrated site-care elements in the enhanced scenario.2,000 – 6,000
Total Estimated Budget 35,000 – 85,000

The Base Scenario represents the minimum required investment to address safety, access, and environmental care at Poza Azul.

The Enhanced Scenario allows for improved durability, construction quality, and long-term performance, while maintaining a low-impact approach appropriate for a sensitive jungle environment.

Final scopes and costs will be refined through on-site technical assessments and detailed design development once implementation begins.

This phase will also include coordination with the local community and stakeholders, ensuring participatory decision-making and alignment with local needs and environmental conditions.
